an awesome quote

“I love my church, and I’m a Catholic who was raised by intellectuals who were very devout. I was raised to believe that you could question the church and still be a Catholic. What is worthy of satire is the misuse of religion for destructive or political gains. That’s totally different from the Word, the blood, the body, and the Christ. His kingdom is not of this earth.” ~ Stephen Colbert, from an interview with Time Out New York from June 2005 (by way of this week’s SoJo Mail)

Personally, I would say the second sentence is–and should–also be true for Protestants.

NHL top 50. it’s an effed up list.

The 50 best NHL players, as ranked by Sportsline’s Wes Goldstein

Let me just pick out a few here…

1. Jaromir Jagr
2. Joe Thornton

While I think Jagr belongs in the top five, I don’t think he should have been numero uno. Joe Thornton, on the other hand, totally belongs in the top five.

5. Ilya Kovalchuk

Whuh? WTF is he doing on the list? I’d switch him for Ovechkin.

11. Nicklas Lidstrom

Was this guy asleep during the Olympics? This guy totally belongs in the top ten! (Yes, I know we’re talking NHL; but a lot of these guys also played in the Olympics this year, and in the past, so I think bringing it up is totally valid.)

12. Alexander Ovechkin

Like I said…switch him and Kovalchuk. I mean, come on. Ovechkin is a one-man machine, not to mention he is probably single-handedly responsible for neither the US nor Canada medalling at the Olympics this year. Actually, I’d dare say he should’ve been number one.

13. Sidney Crosby

The ranking is alright, I think (maybe a little higher); but I still will never understand why Team Canada gave him the shaft for that sonofabeehive, Todd Bertuzzi.

21. Martin Brodeur

Probably one of the best goalies in the league, and he’s not in the top ten? Good lawd. I mean, yeah, Kipprusoff is good, but so is Marty (despite that he plays for one of the teams I loathe with a passion–the New Jersey Devils).

40. Mats Sundin

What. The. Hell? Mats is easily top ten or twenty material. And once again, was this guy asleep during the Olympics? Not to mention Mats has a few things it seems several players lack, in my book–among them, class and maturity.

Meanwhile, why isn’t Jose Theodore on the list? Another one of the best goalies in the league. And what about Stevie-Y (who retired after this season)?

So for my top five…

1) Ovechkin
2) Thornton
3) Crosby
4) Brodeur/Theodore (haven’t figured it out yet)
5) Sundin

CBC axes Street Cents

CBC News: CBC axes Street Cents

Although this show was/is geared mainly toward teenagers, I watched this show pretty much from its debut in 1989/1990 until circa 2001/02. It had some excellent information over the years, and not only did it help teens become smart consumers, but it also delved into various serious issues at times. At the time I thought it was very informative.

CBC cites dwindling ratings for its demise after seventeen years. Well, IMO, it didn’t help that CBC moved it some time ago from Mondays at 5:30 pm local time (7 pm in Newfoundland–a slot it owned for most of the 1990s and a little into this century) to Sunday afternoons when virtually no one is watching anyway, not to mention it seemed to me like promotion for it has been virtually non-existent for a while now. You would think CBC would take the hint.

Sigh. At the same time, though, it has been on seventeen years, and that’s a damned good run. Thumbs up to everyone who’s ever worked on that show, either in front of or behind the camera, and–of course–Moui (sp?) the Pig and Two-Bit the Hamster. ;)

another year. yay.

Happy (late) birthday to me.

26. Good lawd.

what is this administration thinking?!

Retroactive war crime protection proposed.

“I think what this bill can do is in effect immunize past crimes. That’s why it’s so dangerous,” said a third attorney, Eugene Fidell, president of the National Institute of Military Justice.

Fidell said the initiative is “not just protection of political appointees, but also CIA personnel who led interrogations.”

(snipped)

Larry Cox, Amnesty International USA’s executive director, said that “President Bush is looking to limit the War Crimes Act through legislation” now that the Supreme Court has embraced Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions. In June, the court ruled that Bush’s plan to try Guantanamo Bay detainees in military tribunals violates Article 3.

Good freakin’ lawd. November 2008 almost can’t come fast enough.
