church + abortion + 11-year-old = WHUH?

Guardian Unlimited | Special reports | Church condemns abortion performed on raped girl, 11 (found by way of Outchurched)

A Vatican official has said the Catholic church will excommunicate a medical team who performed Colombia’s first legal abortion on an 11-year-old girl, who was eight weeks pregnant after being raped by her stepfather.

(Emphasis mine.)

So the Catholic church is, pretty much, saying it’s alright for an eleven-year-old girl to get knocked up by her stepfather against her will and condemns the doctors who probably saved her life by terminating the pregnancy. What the…?

on notice!

You’re On Notice! - The Stephen Colbert “On Notice Board” Generator

I made two–one a couple of weeks ago, and another a little earlier. I like my most recent one the best, methinks. And here it is…

You're on notice!

So why are they “on notice”?

GW Shrub ~ Do I even have to explain this one? ;)

Fundamentalists ~ As I see it, fundamentalism is pretty freakin’ dangerous. So there ya go.

Christian A-Holes ~ Let’s just say I’ve come across some in recent times online.

Project Runway ~ Season three is not as good as seasons one and two. Besides all that, after the trash challenge, they kept Vincent over Alison?! What the…?

Stephen Harper ~ Canadian Prime Minister who reminds me too much of a marionette doll. Fella gives me the creeps.

NB Conservative Party ~ New Brunswick (the Canadian province, not the town/city in New Jersey) is going to the polls next month. After the last election, the Conservatives there got a minority government. Apparently, some New Brunswickers haven’t been happy with the way things are going there, plus–like I said–it was a minority government. It was bound to happen. ;)

Ryan Seacrap…err, I mean Seacrest ~ I think he’s smarmy; and he seems to be everywhere (particularly Fox and E!). Those of you who don’t watch American Idol, E!, or–really–any television at all can consider yourselves very thankful. (For the record, I don’t watch AI (I loathe “talent competitions”), but once in a while I’ll check out something on E!…and there he’ll be.)

Top 40 Radio Stations ~ Duh. They play the same crap over and over again ad nauseum, 24/7.

katrina, one year later

Aimée-zing, isn’t it? ~ A blog by Mae, an online friend who lives in NOLA and was there when Katrina hit last summer. Since then, she’s used this blog to document her experiences within the year since the hurricane.

Photographs of post-Katrina NOLA ~ These were taken by Kim, during a visit to the city last year post-Katrina. She now lives in Chicago but was born and raised in New Orleans. (There are two more sets of NOLA photos taken in May of this year on her Flickr page. Even in those, you can still see there was still a lot of damage yet to be repaired.)

Former FEMA chief Michael Brown (aka “Brownie”) was interviewed on Sunday’s This Week with George Stephanopolous about Katrina’s aftermath, and noting what went wrong (including taking responsibility for his own screw-ups).

crooksandliars.com coverage of Katrina. To mark the anniversary, the webmaster there will be reposting videos from last year’s news coverage of it.

A BBC journalist returns to NOLA to see what has and hasn’t changed in the year since the hurricane. There are a plethora of other pieces on their website, too.

In short, the city still has a long way to go before it can be completely whole again. :(

put ‘em both on trial!

Bush and Saddam Should Both Stand Trial, Says Nuremberg Prosecutor

I liked this part (emphasis mine)…

Which wars should be prosecuted? “Every war will lead to attacks on civilians,” he said. “Crimes against humanity, destruction beyond the needs of military necessity, rape of civilians, plunder–that always happens in wartime. So my answer personally, after working for 60 years on this problem and [as someone] who hates to see all these young people get killed no matter what their nationality, is that you’ve got to stop using warfare as a means of settling your disputes.”
