upgrade and new look

Yep, the blog now matches the site. Also, I’ve upgraded to Wordpress 2.02. Yay! :)

two very sad anniversaries

1) The death of peace activist Rachel Corrie. Recently, a one-woman play, with various writings used for basis, was staged in London (soon, it will have an audience in London’s West End). It was to be staged beginning this month in New York, but was canceled.

2) The start of the Iraq War/Operation Iraqi Freedom (formerly OIL…the “L” for “liberation”)/Gulf War II/the possible 21st century Vietnam. The case for impeachment. FAIR looks back in its own little way. Anywhere from 33,000+ to 37,000+ civilians have died…and over 12,000 of those deaths happened during the third year (the worst month being August 2005, with over 2000 reported deaths). Correspondents debate. GWB says pre-emptive war is a wonderful thing! Screw the UN Charter! Meanwhile, the US launches another air assault on Iraq. If polls means something to you, 60% say the war was NOT worth it.

rest in peace, whammy-tamer

Former game show host/actor Peter Tomarken and wife Kathleen killed in a plane crash. And from this piece

The plane was on its way to San Diego to ferry a medical patient to the UCLA Medical Center, said Doug Griffith, a spokesman for Angel Flight West, a nonprofit which provides free air transportation for needy patients.

Griffith said the pilot was a volunteer for the group. According to the FAA, the plane was registered to Tomarken and he was the pilot.

The plane apparently had engine trouble and was headed back to Santa Monica Airport, located about two miles inland, but went down about 9:35 a.m. just off shore, said Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Allen Kenitzer.

Peter was best known for hosting the game show Press Your Luck from 1983-86 (reruns aired on USA from 1987-95). I have vague memories of watching PYL when I was little; and, now as a twenty-something, watching it again on GSN brings back some form of nostalgia for me. And given he was one of the first game show hosts I’d ever seen, this news is a bit of a shock.

Rest in peace. :(

i love the smell of stupidity in the morning

Jesusland coming soon?!

The Israeli government is planning to give up a large slice of land to American Christian evangelicals to build a biblical theme park by the Sea of Galilee where Jesus is said to have walked on water and fed 5,000 with five loaves and two fish.

A consortium of Christian groups, led by the television evangelist Pat Robertson, is in negotiation with the Israeli ministry of tourism and a deal is expected in the coming months. The project is expected to bring up to 1 million extra tourists a year but an undeclared benefit will be the cementing of a political alliance between the Israeli rightwing and the American Christian right.

Well, Pat Robertson’s involvement certainly helps explain the (IMO) lunacy of this idea. I can imagine Christ is up there now scratching his head, wondering, “What in the name of My Dad are all these whackjobs up to now? Don’t they remember how pissed off I got when I saw all those merchants at the temple hawking their stuff?”

One commenter at the Huffington Post made a good point, I thought…

And the reason why the Israeli government is going along for the ride is that Pat Robertson and his right-wing allies support “aliyah” (Jewish emigration toe Israel), supports Israel’s foreign policy, and supports the US government’s $5 billion in free hand outs to the the Israelis every year. Whereas the Vatican is very critical of Israel.

Really, I believe this is a step on the part of right-wing American christians to start of a sectarian war with the Vatican over who represents the true Christian voice.

Are right-wingers really so arrogant?

They want to wage war against a billion Muslims; plus, they also want to wage war against a billion Catholics.

Is there no end in sight to their insanity?

Just so said commenter knows–in case that person stumbles on this entry–the Religious Right doesn’t speak for me. ;)

(Pat Robertson) said he was thrilled that “there will be a place in the Galilee where evangelical Christians from all over the world can come to celebrate the actual place where Jesus Christ lived and taught”.

They can do that NOW without the likes of you turning it into Jesusland!

This is absolutely disgusting.
