did they really need to pass this?

H. Res. 847: Recognizing the importance of Christmas and the Christian faith

It passed in the House.

Now, why this bill? Aren’t there more important bills sitting around that could’ve been debated/discussed? What about overriding the veto on childrens health care? I’d think that’d be more important than this.

Also, there is a glaring error in the bill itself (emphasis mine)…

Whereas the United States, being founded as a constitutional republic in the traditions of western civilization, finds much in its history that points observers back to its roots in Christianity;

The US has only minute roots in Christianity, if that. Most of the founders were Deists, not Christians — they believed in a higher power; but rejected Christ’s divinity. Thomas Jefferson even went so far as to write his own Bible; and he informed the Danbury Baptists in his 1803 letter to them that the First Amendment was created to create “a wall of separation between church and state”. In the introduction to Thomas Paine’s Age of Reason, he stated that while he did believe “in one God, and no more”, he also rejected all the teachings of various religions and denominations. Article 10 of the Treaty of Tripoli, ratified in 1790 and printed in the major newspapers of the day, stated that the US was not founded on Christianity or any other religion. The founders believed that mixing religion and government would be disasterous.

Personally, I’d go so far as to say that the passage of this bill comes very close to Congress establishing a state religion — which goes against the First Amendment.

Why?

there goes another one?

Richard Roberts taking leave of absence from ORU after accusations by three ex-profs of using donors’ money for his own spending pleasure (home renovations and the like) and illegal involvement in a local political campaign.

To make things even more interesting, his wife, Lindsay, is also under fire for having liasons with an underage male. This is included in an internal report prepared by none other than her sister. The missus denies this accusation, of course, as her husband denys what’s going on with him. Apparently, God told him to deny it. (More at Moriel.org)

But what if all this turns out to be the truth? Then that would mean God (allegedly?) told Richard Roberts to lie, which is a total contradiction of God’s character (”God is not a man that he should lie”) and the Bible itself (”Thou shalt not lie”). Personally, I don’t think that was God’s voice he was hearing. As for ORU, one student –according to the piece up at Moriel — has asked for a transfer. Who knows how its other students will be affected.

rest in peace, ruth graham

Ruth Bell Graham (wife of the Rev. Billy Graham) dead at 78

“Ruth was my life partner, and we were called by God as a team,” Billy Graham said in a statement. “No one else could have borne the load that she carried. She was a vital and integral part of our ministry, and my work through the years would have been impossible without her encouragement and support.

“I am so grateful to the Lord that He gave me Ruth, and especially for these last few years we’ve had in the mountains together. We’ve rekindled the romance of our youth, and my love for her continued to grow deeper every day. I will miss her terribly and look forward even more to the day I can join her in Heaven.”

one siren silenced

Jerry Falwell Dies at 73

As it turned out, he collapsed in his office.

“I shudder to think where the country would be right now if the religious right had not evolved,” he said when he stepped down as Moral Majority president in 1987.

Errr, you’d have a religious left that’s even stronger? I dunno.

Matt Foreman, executive director of National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, extended condolences to those close to Falwell, but added: “Unfortunately, we will always remember him as a founder and leader of America’s anti-gay industry, someone who exacerbated the nation’s appalling response to the onslaught of the AIDS epidemic, someone who demonized and vilified us for political gain and someone who used religion to divide rather than unite our nation.”

The 1980s marked the religious conservative movement’s high-water mark. In more recent years, Falwell had become a problematic figure for the GOP. His remarks a few days after Sept. 11, 2001, essentially blaming feminists, gays and liberals for bringing on the terrorist attacks, drew a rebuke from the White House, and he apologized.

That, pretty much, sums it up, doesn’t it?

In a statement, President Bush said he and First Lady Laura Bush were “deeply saddened” by the loss of a man who “cherished faith, family and freedom.”

“One of his lasting contributions was the establishment of Liberty University, where he taught young people to remain true to their convictions and rely upon God’s word throughout each stage of their lives,” Bush said.

Yeah, he cherished faith (his Christian fundamentalism), his family (blood relations and other Christians–mainly those who held his views), and freedom (but not for the queer community, women, liberals, or anyone who didn’t subscribe to his faith).

Some of you may be like, “Shells! You shouldn’t speak ill of the dead, even if you didn’t like the person!” Well, unfortunately, most of what I think of Falwell is ill. I do wish his family well, though.

easter’s pagan roots + the resurrection

Easter Sunday is coming up. Below are a couple of excellent studies (IMO) from the website Good News About God…

Are Holidays like Christmas and Easter pagan or Christian?

Was Jesus resurrected on a Sunday? Or was it really Saturday?
