Apparently, at this high school, no one is allowed to carry bags or purses. Girls can…if they’re on their periods. And if they’re caught with a handbag on their person, they have to answer The Question. You know what The Question is. In protest, both girls and boys have worn tampons and maxi-pads on their person. Some of them have been declared “part of the problem”.

Do these morons really think it’s a good idea to ask girls between the ages of 14 and 18 or 19 if they’re on their periods? I know back then, I was occasionally a hormonal wreck and hated it any time I had to go home to get fresh undies because I had an accident. Do any of the female faculty realize how funkymothering ludicrous this sort of rule is? Do they even remember what it was like when they were teenage girls in high school…on their periods.

Meanwhile, what the eff is wrong with the students protesting this? In my opinion, they’ve every right to protest this rule; and personally, I think they way they’re going about it is awesome, not to mention organized and creative. The rule is a bunch of crap! Is this school (where, you know, LEARNING is supposed to take place) or is this a GD concentration camp or prison? Zuzu, a commentor at Pandagon’s blog post on this, virtually nailed it for me: “Schools are absolutely insane nowadays. I think the crackdown’s been going on for a while, but between Columbine and 9/11, school administrators have lost their damn minds.”

That said, if they’re going to keep this dumb rule, I think it’s only fair that the faculty ask the boys every day if they had a wet dream the night before. If you’re going to embarass the hell out of a teenage girl, you may as well embarass the boys, too. (I say this “tongue-in-cheek”, of course. :))
