new photos up

I’ve added three new photos to the site…

* “Every House Has a Story VII” (Houses and Paths)
* “Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming” (Black and White)
* “Take a Load Off” (Miscellaneous)

I’ve also added a link to BoardX in the Links section. (If you’re reading this on the Blog, the link is also in the sidebar.) Come and join! :)

election fever is spreading northward

A year before what would’ve been Canada’s next election, PM Stephen Harper dissolves Parliament, and calls an election for October 14. He’d been running a minority Conservative government for 2 1/2 years.

For me, the best part about Canadian election season is simple: It’s short! I mean, in the US, we had people declaring their intentions to run for president in, what, 2006, during midterms? Next door, MPs — current ones and wannabes alike (not to mention the party leaders, who all have seats in Parliament themselves) — have just thirty days to convince the citizens of their respective ridings (similar to congressional districts) that they suck the least out of everyone.

Another good part: Although each party gets commercial spots within regular programming on TV, the CBC (at the very least…don’t know about CTV or Global) designates about five minutes of airtime just for political ads. And not just for the Big Four (Liberals, Conservatives, New Democratic Party, Bloc Quebecois); the smaller parties there get airtime, too! When’s the last time you saw an advert by a party that wasn’t represented by an elephant or a jackass? (Cue crickets.)

And lastly: Canadians know how to mark an “X” or a checkmark. No need for voting machines there. Oh, and they can count their ballots in one night! Remember 2000? While their election was done and Canadians knew the Liberals would have a third go-around at screwing stuff up, we in the US still had no effing clue if we would be dealing with a Bush or a Gore.

friday five times two

From the Friday 5 community at Livejournal

1. Are you going to school this fall? If not, what was the most recent year of school you completed?
No. I graduated high school in 1998.

2. If yes, what kind of schooling are you doing (middle school, high school, undergraduate, graduate, etc.)?
Not applicable.

3. Are you someone who enjoys/enjoyed going back to school?
As a young’un, yeah. When I got older, not so much. (Except for maybe my senior year, since I knew it would be the last one.)

4. Do/did you like back-to-school shopping? Why or why not?
So-so. Most of the stuff I got was practical stuff (notebooks, loose-leaf paper, binders); I didn’t get a ton of clothes.

5. Are/were you a good student?
That depended on the subject. I was best at math and geography. English was so-so. Most of the sciences were alright (except physics…bleh). I never failed a subject, though.

From Friday5.org

1. What’s your favorite orange-colored food?
Oranges.

2. What’s the best way to drink orange juice?
In a glass. No pulp, if you please. For some reason, it makes me gag.

3. Which candy’s orange-colored pieces taste best?
M&M’s. :D

4. What are your feelings about orange soda?
I don’t drink it. Sometimes I did when I was a kid; I wasn’t really a fan then, either.

5. When did you last wear an orange item of clothing?
I don’t think I’ve ever worn orange. I don’t think it looks that good on me.

the little guys

By “the little guys”, I mean the other 2008 President and Vice President candidates you will probably hear nothing about in the mainstream or even the independent media. I thinkt the day the US population learns and understands that they have more choices besides the Republicans and the Democrats to run the country, the better!

Not wild about Obama/Biden? Turned off by McCain/Palin? Here is a small cornucopia of other options…

Bob Barr/Allyn Root (Libertarian) ~ http://www.bobbarr2008.com/

Cynthia McKinney/Rosa Clemente (Green) ~ http://votetruth08.com/

Chuck Baldwin/Darrell Castle (Constitution Party) ~ http://www.baldwin08.com/

Brian Moore/Stewart Alexander (Socialist Party USA) ~ http://www.votesocialist2008.org/

(For what it’s worth, I’ve yet to decide myself. So don’t consider this an endorsement of anyone — just me showing the rest of you what else is out there. :))

the RNC loves lieberman

Lieberman will make prime-time speech at RNC.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Why doesn’t this fella just cross the GD floor already?! Sweet lawd.

On an unrelated note, I’m still organizing my thoughts on the choices of both Biden and Palin for VP.
