US detainees will now have the minimal rights alloted to them under the Geneva Convention.
While I’m glad this is happening, I just have to say this: They should’ve had those rights all along, IMO.
Amnesty International welcomed the Pentagon’s move but urged officials “not to gut these protections by narrowly defining what constitutes outrages on personal dignity.”
“The military should have been doing this all along,” said Katherine Newell Bierman with Human Rights Watch.
“It’s what they’re trained to do.”
“And there are also people not in military custody that this doesn’t reach. People keep forgetting about the secret CIA prisons.”
